Hayduk Engineering is currently providing full-time construction inspection services for the $136 million reconstruction of I-95 from Port Chester to the Connecticut State Line. The 15 mile section of the New England Thruway (I-95) carries traffic from New York City to the Connecticut border. Over the past decades, 14 miles of the highway in the Bronx, Pelham, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Harrison and Rye have been reconstructed. This project will complete the reconstruction of the “last mile,” improve motorists’ experience and increase the safety along this section of I-95. The project spans approximately one mile and contains a six ramp interchange system with the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) and Midland Avenue in the City of Rye and Village of Port Chester in Westchester County. It also includes replacement of the Cross Westchester Expressway ramp bridge and the Grace Church Street bridge over the Thruway, and resurfacing of the Byram River bridge.
The main components of the project includes:

Replacement and realignment of the I-287 eastbound to I-95 northbound ramp bridge
Resurfacing of the Byram River bridge
Realignment of ramp from Midland Avenue to connect directly to I-95 northbound
Widening of I-95 southbound to provide a two-lane exit ramp to I-287 westbound

Substructure Repairs to the Boston Post Road bridge, Purchase Street bridge, and the Blind Brook culvert
Repaving of Playland Parkway entrance and exit ramps
Hayduk Engineering’s responsibilities include construction inspection, record keeping, review of shop drawings and submittals, and construction materials testing. The project is currently entering its third year of construction and is anticipated to be completed in 2021.

This New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) project included the construction of a new Shared Use Path (SUP) connecting the New NY Bridge (Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge) and the existing Esposito Trail, between Route 9W North and the Exit 10 ramp along the NYS Thruway (I-287) in the Village of South Nyack, NY.
The 3.6 mile long SUP is part of the $3.9 billion project to build the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, a cable stayed bridge which replaced the Tappan Zee Bridge in 2017. Approximately 50 million vehicles cross the bridge annually.
The Shared Use Path is a 12 foot wide asphalt path with a blue overlay coating that is shared between pedestrians and bicyclists. Along the path there are six (6) scenic overlook locations and at the terminus of the path on the Rockland County side of the bridge, there is a new parking lot and comfort station.
The project included an underpass below the South Broadway Bridge; a side path behind the South Nyack Village Hall to connect the SUP with the Esposito Trail; retaining walls and noise abatement walls including secant piles walls; reconfiguration of entrance & exit ramps; intersection improvements including traffic signals and street lighting; landscaping and aesthetic features; new vehicular and pedestrian signage including a new overhead sign structure; storm drainage and utility work.
Hayduk Engineering provided full time construction inspection services on this project for the duration of construction as a subconsultant to NV5. The Shared Use Path was opened to the public on June 15, 2020.

Hayduk Engineering was retained to prepare an investigative study related to severe flooding at Whitewood Condominiums in North Hills, NY. The study included analysis of the existing storm drainage collection system, recharge basin, and diffusion well, as well as analysis of storm drainage systems for nearby communities that were contributing to the flooding issue at Whitewood, including a Nassau County owned storm drainage system and recharge basin that was intended to provide emergency overflow capacity for the Whitewood recharge basin.
After completion of the study, Hayduk Engineering prepared engineering design plans and provided full-time construction administration services for the rehabilitation of the existing recharge basin at Whitewood Condominiums. The project included the pumping out of stormwater from within the recharge basin, dredging and removal of accumulated sediment and debris within the recharge basin to re-establish the intended storage volume of the basin, pumping out and removal of accumulated sediment and debris from within the diffusion well, drying out, trucking, and disposal of removed sediments, and re-establishment of the gradient collar material surrounding the diffusion well inlet.

Hayduk Engineering was responsible for performing an in-depth analysis of existing conditions and determining the impacts of proposed development to existing storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure at the West Apartments and Tabler Quad at Stony Brook University. This service was provided as part of the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) evaluation process for two (2) separate student housing expansion projects to introduce an additional 476 beds in two (2) new buildings; one at West Apartments (Building K) and one at Tabler Quad.
As part of the stormwater analysis, Hayduk Engineering performed dry and wet weather inspections of the existing drainage network of catch basins, manholes, leaching pools, and recharge basins that service these student housing developments on campus. As part of the process, Hayduk Engineering was able to correct previous campus inventory maps to properly reflect existing conditions. A HydroCAD stormwater model was then developed for both existing and proposed conditions to determine if any improvements were necessary to the storm drainage system(s).
The sanitary sewer analysis included determining the existing hydraulic capacity of the sanitary sewer network from the proposed points of connection, through the trunk sewer network, to the discharge point at the Suffolk County Sewer District #21 Stony Brook Wastewater Treatment Plant. Our services included a field investigation to verify conditions. Our analysis suggested some minor improvements and further investigation to the system so as to provide an accurate record of existing conditions for further analyses.

This New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project included storm drainage investigations and design improvements at six (6) separate locations in eastern Suffolk County on Long Island. Hayduk Engineering worked as a subconsultant to Hardesty and Hanover and completed location 6, which covered a 5 mile long section of Montauk Highway from Sayres Path to Skimhampton Road in East Hampton, NY. The purpose of this project is to improve drainage systems and the quality of road runoff to adjacent surface waters. Hayduk Engineering was responsible for the development of design alternatives, which included both construction and non-construction remediation improvements. The project included dry weather and wet weather inspection and cataloguing of over one-hundred seventy (170) storm drainage structures. Hayduk Engineering prepared engineering design plans for improvements and repairs to the drainage system along with a condition assessment report.
The Maybrook Trailway is a shared-use bicycling and pedestrian path running along a 23-mile portion of the Metro-North Railroad (MNR) Beacon Line Corridor from Brewster to Hopewell Junction. This portion of the Maybrook Trailway, formerly referred to as the Beacon Line, does not currently have active train traffic. The project proposes building a “rail with trail” on the Brewster to Hopewell Junction segment. The Maybrook Trailway is an important part of the Empire State Trail (EST), providing a key link between the Putnam Trailway and the Dutchess Rail Trail and Walkway Over the Hudson State Park. The Empire State Trail, when completed in 2021, will create a 750-mile trail bike and walking pathway stretching from New York City to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo.
This $30+/- million Metro North Railroad project incorporates a 10 foot wide asphalt Shared Use Path (SUP) paralleling the defunct Beacon Line. The project traverses beautiful mountain terrains, lakes, and forest scenes. Several bridges are being replaced as part of this project and several new trailheads are proposed for access to the trailway.
Hayduk Engineering was responsible for all preliminary stormwater related modeling and design for the trailway, review of all civil design submittals by the Design-Builder, and also provided field related services, construction inspections, and forensic investigations during construction. The proposed storm drainage system for the Maybrook Trailway and Trailheads incorporates swales, stone diaphragms, infiltration basins, and trench drains. Hayduk Engineering prepared existing and proposed HydroCAD stormwater models, preliminary design plans and details for the project, and the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
The Maybrook Trailway is anticipated to open to the public in late 2020.
As part of the Living With The Bay Program, Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) identified over thirty (30) stormwater resiliency related improvements projects throughout the Mill River Watershed in Nassau County, NY. The Smith Pond Rehabilitation project is one of the more significant of these projects. Smith Pond, originally named “DeMott’s Pond” after the local DeMott’s Mill that was located on the pond, is part of the tributary system in the Mill River Watershed located in the Village of Rockville Centre, located downstream of Hempstead Lake. The existing pond water surface elevation is controlled by a weir which discharges downstream flow into a channel and a series of culverts that run underneath Merrick Road and NY Route 27 Sunrise Highway to Mill River. This entire region was heavily impacted by the Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
In an effort to address flood/storm resiliency issues, improve the ecology of this ecosystem, and improve user access to the pond for recreation, a number of improvements were specified as part of this project, including construction of a fish ladder, a new greenway/trail paralleling the pond, two (2) new flood walls, improvements to the weir, replacement of deteriorated timber bulkheads, installation of new trailway lighting, and replacement of existing asphalt pavement parking lots with porous pavement.
The improvements project required the existing weir to be evaluated. Hayduk Engineering and a team of diver inspectors and structural engineers evaluated the condition of the existing weir. The weir is comprised of a reinforced concrete weir cap, timber walers, timber sheet piling, a concrete channel, and a drainage structure which allows for the pond to be drained. The evaluation resulted in the recommendation of improvements to the timber sheet piling. The Hayduk Engineering team designed a reinforced concrete encasement system that is expected to extend the lifespan of the weir for decades. Hayduk Engineering also evaluated the condition of the existing bulkheads surrounding the weir, which resulted in the engineering design of the replacement of the failing timber bulkheads with new cast in place concrete bulkheads. Hayduk Engineering was also responsible for the engineering design of the new trailway bollard-style lighting system and the infrastructure for a future closed circuit television security system to be installed at a later date.

Conscience Bay is located on the north shore of Long Island abutting the Incorporated Villages of Old Field and Poquott. The Bay was classified as a “Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Impaired Waterbody” by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), pursuant to NYS Section 303(d). The goal of this project was to improve the water quality of Conscience Bay by reducing nutrient loading and treating stormwater prior to discharging into the Bay.
The Joint Venture team of Hayduk Engineering and GEI Consultants, Inc., P.C. worked together to provide grant assistance to the Village to help secure the funding and collectively completed all planning, engineering, construction administration, and monitoring tasks associated with this project. The Village was awarded a $60,000 design grant by the Long Island Sound Futures Fund (LISFF) and a $250,000 construction grant, the largest grant awarded by LISFF.
Hayduk Engineering completed a watershed analysis for the entire Village and identified four (4) critical locations where stormwater road runoff was inadvertently being discharged directly into Conscience Bay during high tide and heavy rainfall events. These four (4) locations where selected to receive stormwater improvements as part of this project.
This innovative stormwater project included the design of new three-phase stormwater treatment systems in each of these critical areas. The systems included precast concrete leaching pools, galleries of PVC infiltration basins, and vegetated bioswales. The project also included water quality monitoring, ecological studies, and invasive species management services which were provided by GEI Consultants. The HE/GEI Team was responsible for coordination with the funding agency, submittal of grant applications, engineering and environmental design and permitting, preparation of bidding documents and technical specifications, soliciting, reviewing and analyzing bids from contractors, engineering during construction and full time construction inspection services, and final closeout of the project.
Village of Old Field Conscience Bay Stormwater Treatment and Wetlands Enhancement Projecteverbeta2020-09-01T12:58:47+00:00
Hayduk Engineering was responsible for the engineering design and construction supervision of The Highlands Condominiums in Port Jefferson, NY. The development consists of twenty-five (25) buildings containing a total of 264 condominium units. Hayduk Engineering’s design responsibilities included; roadway and parking lot design, site grading, drainage system design including two (2) innovative drainage ponds, RPZ and water distribution system design, sanitary sewer collection system and pumping station and force main connection into Suffolk County Sewer District #1 – Port Jefferson.
Originally the project included the design of an on-site 58,000 gpd dual train extended aeration sewage treatment plant. Later it was decided to connect in to the SCSD #1 Port Jefferson system. The connection required HE to perform an inflow and infiltration study of pertinent SCSD #1 sewers which resulted in our recommendation that the deteriorated sewers be “slip lined” with Instituform. The rehabilitation project included slip lining approximately 150 LF of sewer pipe, installation of additional cleanouts, and concrete and joint repairs to two existing manholes. The constructed sewer collection system consists of approximately 4,000 LF of 8” PVC gravity sewers and 22 manholes, and cleanouts. The pumping station consists of a 8’ diameter, 22’ deep wet well containing two (2) 20 HP submersible pumps with an operating point of 161 gpm at 97’ total dynamic head, and a 1300 LF 4” diameter DIP force main connection to SCSD #1. The pumping station is also equipped with a 50 kW emergency generator.

This 5+ acre commercial development features a new 90,000 SF Public Storage facility located on Middle Country Road in Middle Island, NY. Since the facility was occupied in May 2019, it has become one of the most successful storage facilities in the region. Hayduk Engineering was responsible for civil and site engineering for the project including; RPZ and water distribution system design, on-site sanitary sewers and septic system design, site grading and storm drainage, 3d earthwork modeling and cut/fill analysis, parking lot and pavement design, erosion and sediment control design, site lighting design, preparation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan, and landscape design. Hayduk Engineering managed submittals to the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Suffolk County Water Authority, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New York State Department of Transportation.
