Representative Project: Van Wyck Expressway/JFK Access Improvements

Hayduk Engineering is part of the project team that is providing preliminary design services to widen the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) in order to add a fourth lane from the Kew Gardens Interchange to JFK Airport. Congestion and delays on the Van Wyck are extensive and exist for many hours of the day, seven days a week. The project may impact up to twenty bridges including four bridges that carry the LIRR over the Van Wyck Expressway. In addition, operations of the various on/off ramps will be evaluated. The length of the project is approximately 4.3 miles. The bridges and interchanges within the project limits will be investigated to determine appropriate work to accommodate the widened VWE. The proper environmental issues will be investigated and documented. In addition, four bridges that carry the long Island Railroad (LIRR) over the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) will be replaced. Several Port Authority Airtrain bents will also require relocation. Hayduk Engineering is responsible for a flyover/tunnel feasibility study of the VWE at 2 LIRR bridges, drainage design support, structural support, design improvements to service roads, and design of all overhead sign structures along the route.
